What is RAM memory? Everything about Random Access Memory

RAM stands for Random Access Memory and is also called working memory. This volatile memory ensures that your computer, laptop, or desktop runs quickly. When you have multiple programs and files open at the same time, your PC uses RAM to execute tasks. How much RAM you need depends on your usage.

What is RAM memory?

What is RAM memory?

RAM memory is temporary storage where your operating system, Windows, browser tabs, and programs are quickly loaded. How much RAM you need depends on your usage: a PC with a lot of internal memory works faster than a computer with little RAM.

8 GB RAM is good for browsing, while 16 GB or more is recommended for Photoshop or video editing. RAM modules such as DDR4 or DDR5 determine speed and efficiency. The difference between RAM and an SSD or hard drive is that RAM is quickly accessible but does not store data after shutdown. More RAM means better performance!

What are the different types of RAM?

RAM memory is internal memory that helps your processor quickly process programs and tabs. There are different RAM modules, such as DDR3 RAM and DDR4, where DDR stands for Double Data Rate. A higher number means a faster number of switches per second (MHz), which improves your computer’s performance.

Additionally, there are different types of memory:

  • DIMM (Dual In-Line Memory Module) → for desktops and motherboards.
  • SODIMM (Small Outline DIMM) → for laptops and compact systems.

What does the clock speed of RAM mean?

The clock speed of RAM memory is expressed in MHz and indicates the number of switches per second. The higher the clock speed, the faster RAM modules can process multiple programs at the same time. This is especially important when running multiple processes simultaneously, such as browser tabs, Premiere Pro, or NAS usage.

A computer with little RAM and low clock speed runs slower than a PC or laptop with faster RAM modules. 4 GB is suitable for basic use, while 32 GB and a higher clock speed are better for heavy tasks and gaming.

What does the CAS latency of RAM mean?

The CAS latency (CL) of RAM memory indicates how many cycles are needed before data is processed. A lower CAS latency means faster access to temporary files, which is important for running multiple programs simultaneously and switching between browser tabs.

How much RAM do you need?

How much RAM you need depends on your computer usage. The more processes you run at the same time, the more RAM modules you will need.

For basic use such as browsing and internet use, 8 GB RAM is sufficient. Do you work with heavy programs like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, or Adobe After Effects? Then 16 GB or more is recommended. For professional video editing and demanding tasks, 32 GB RAM or more is needed.

A computer with little RAM runs slower than a PC or laptop with enough memory. Check which types of RAM modules are compatible with your system and choose the right RAM memory for your needs!
