Why a Lenovo ThinkPad?

The ThinkPad has existed since 1992, originally from IBM and since 2005 from Lenovo. Lenovo reported in 2023 that more than 200 million ThinkPads had been sold since that start, making it one of the longest-running lines in laptops.

X series: light and thin

The X series is the lightweight line, with the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon as its best-known face. This 14-inch ultrabook weighs around a kilo and is meant for people on the move. Even an older ThinkPad X1 from gen 3 still handles office work fine.

T series: the workhorses

The T series is the most popular, and rightly so. A Lenovo ThinkPad T14 or the older Lenovo ThinkPad T480 gives you strong performance, more ports, and the best day-to-day usability. The T14s sits in between: thinner than a T14, with the same reliability.

L series and the rest of the family

The L series, such as the ThinkPad L14, is the affordable entry with much of the same quality. Lenovo also has the ThinkBook for small businesses, the IdeaPad for home use, and the Lenovo Yoga as a 2-in-1 with touchscreen. For heavy compute you look at the ThinkPad P-series mobile workstations, a better base for video editing than a regular thinkpad laptop.

Which specs do you really need?

More is not automatically better. Across ThinkPad laptops you see big price differences that often add nothing for your work.

An Intel Core i5 is enough for most people. An Intel Core i7 only pays off with heavy multitasking, video editing, or virtual machines. Some models run an AMD Ryzen 5 Pro, a fine alternative.

For memory, 16 GB is the sweet spot. With 16 GB you run Windows 11, dozens of browser tabs, and Office smoothly; 8 GB works for light use but ages faster. Always pick an SSD over an old hard drive. Dedicated graphics only matter for 3D or heavy visual work; for office work the Intel graphics in the processor is plenty. A 14-inch screen is the classic ThinkPad size. Want Windows 11 Pro or the new Copilot features, check that your model supports it.
