Laptop freezing or crashing? How to get it working again

Written on 18 September 2026

In short

If your laptop freezes, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. Task Manager often still responds, and that is where you close the program marked Not responding. If that does not work, hold the power button for ten seconds. After that you look for the cause, and it is usually too little RAM or overheating.

  • Ctrl+Shift+Esc first, only then a hard shutdown
  • Freezing with many tabs open: too little RAM
  • Freezing with a loud fan: overheating
  • Freezing in safe mode: then it is the hardware

A laptop that freezes is rarely broken. In most cases something is full: the RAM, the storage, or the cooling that can no longer get the heat away.

Laptop with a frozen screen on which Windows no longer responds

What do you do if your laptop is freezing right now?

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. That opens Task Manager directly, and it often keeps responding while the rest of Windows has already frozen.

Find the program in the list marked Not responding. Click it, choose End task, and in nine out of ten cases the laptop comes back to life.

If Task Manager does not respond either, hold the power button for ten seconds until the laptop switches off. That does no damage if you do it occasionally; you only lose unsaved work.

Why does a laptop freeze?

There are five causes that together explain nearly everything: too little RAM, overheating, full or failing storage, a bad driver, and malware.

Telling them apart takes little effort, because each cause has its own signal. Below they are listed in order of how often they occur.

Recognising too little RAM

This is by far the most common cause. Open Task Manager, go to the Performance tab and look at Memory: if you are structurally above 90 percent, that is your problem.

What happens then: Windows moves memory to the SSD to make room. That is many times slower than real RAM, and the result feels like freezing while the processor is doing nothing.

The quick fix is keeping less open at once, browser tabs above all. The real fix is more memory; how much you need is in how much RAM a laptop needs, and what it actually is you can read in what RAM memory is.

Recognising overheating

If you hear the fan constantly at full speed and the underside feels hot, the processor is throttling itself to cool down. That is called throttling, and it feels exactly like freezing.

The cause is almost always dust in the ventilation grilles. On a laptop a few years old there is a felt layer there blocking the airflow.

How to clean that safely is in cleaning a laptop. Also put it on a hard surface and not on a duvet or your lap, because then it draws in no air.

Drivers, updates and malware

If the freezing started after an update, a driver is the suspect. The graphics driver above all: it runs alongside everything, and a failed installation causes freezes at random moments.

Test that with safe mode. Hold Shift while you click Restart, then choose Troubleshoot, Advanced options, Startup Settings, Restart, and press 4.

Windows then starts with only the essential drivers. If it does not freeze there, the problem is in software and you can reinstall the graphics driver or roll Windows back with system restore.

If you see a process in Task Manager that you do not recognise and that constantly causes high load, think of malware. Cryptominers do exactly this; what to look out for is in recognising spyware.

When is it the hardware?

When it freezes in safe mode as well, or when it happens while nothing heavy is running. Then you look at the storage and the RAM themselves.

An SSD that is starting to fail causes freezes when opening or saving files, often with a short spike in disk activity. If there is still an old-fashioned hard disk in it, that is all the more likely; the difference is in SSD versus HDD.

Faulty RAM gives a different pattern: random crashes for no reason, sometimes with a blue screen. Windows has a test for that, the Memory Diagnostic tool, which you find through the start menu.

How do you stop it coming back?

Keep at least fifteen percent of your SSD free. Windows needs room to work, and a full disk is a classic cause of slowness that looks like freezing.

Clean the ventilation grilles once a year, and install updates instead of putting them off for months. Most driver problems have been solved in a newer version by now.

If it keeps stuttering despite everything, a clean installation often helps more than searching further. How that works is in resetting a laptop to factory settings, and you get more speed out of making your laptop faster.

In brief

Always start with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and close the program that is not responding. Then look for the pattern: freezing with many tabs points to too little RAM, a loud fan to overheating, and freezing in safe mode to hardware. If the laptop really is finished, a refurbished business model with 16 GB of RAM is usually cheaper than repairing it.

Frequently asked questions

My laptop is freezing, what should I do first?

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. That opens Task Manager, which often still responds while the rest is frozen. Find the program marked Not responding, click it and choose End task. If that does not help, hold the power button for ten seconds until the laptop switches off.

Is a hard shutdown bad for my laptop?

Occasionally, no. The SSD can take it and Windows repairs itself on the next start. What you can lose is unsaved work, and with bad luck a file that was being written at that moment. So only do it once Task Manager gets you nowhere.

Why does my laptop keep freezing?

In most cases because of too little RAM or because of overheating. With too little memory Windows starts writing to the SSD and everything feels sluggish; with overheating the processor throttles itself to cool down. Both are recognisable: the first in Task Manager, the second by a loud fan and a warm underside.

How do I start Windows in safe mode?

Hold Shift while you click Restart in the start menu. Then choose Troubleshoot, Advanced options, Startup Settings, Restart, and press 4. Windows then starts with only the essential drivers. If it does not freeze there, the problem is in software and not in the hardware.

Can a virus make my laptop freeze?

Yes. Malware and cryptominers run in the background and eat processor time, which makes everything slow and sometimes freezes it. Check in Task Manager whether there is a process you do not recognise that constantly causes high load, and run a scan with Windows Security.

When is freezing a sign that the laptop is finished?

When it freezes in safe mode as well, or when it freezes while nothing heavy is running. Then you look at the SSD and the RAM. An SSD that is starting to fail causes freezes when opening files; faulty RAM causes random crashes with no pattern.
