At DSL-TECH a 14-inch laptop is almost always a business ThinkPad with 16 or 32 GB of memory and a 16:10 screen of 1920 by 1200. It is our widest range, with the X1 Carbon, the X1 Yoga, the T14s and the T490s. Every machine is tested on more than 30 points and comes with a 2-year warranty.

  • X1 Carbon: around a kilo, Gen 12 with 32 GB and a Core Ultra 7
  • X1 Yoga: a touchscreen that folds right round through 360 degrees, with a pen
  • T14s and T490s: the workhorses, sharpest priced
  • HP ZBook Firefly 14: a workstation with a dedicated graphics card

Why do so many companies choose 14 inch?

Because it is the size that still fits a full keyboard without the laptop becoming heavy. Below 14 inch the keys get narrower; above it the bag gets noticeably heavier.

Lenovo builds its entire top ThinkPad series in this size, and those machines come off three-year leases in large numbers. That is why the range here is the widest and the price per specification the sharpest.

If what you mainly want is the lightest machine, also have a look at 13 inch. If you want more screen space, that starts at 15 inch.

There is more about the range on our page about refurbished Lenovo laptops, which are ThinkPads throughout.

What does a 16:10 screen give you?

Ten percent more height than the classic 16:9. In practice that is three to four extra lines in a document, and in code a whole function that still fits.

Almost all the newer ThinkPads in our range have 1920 by 1200. The older T490s and the ZBook Firefly are still on 1920 by 1080.

At 14 inch Full HD is sharp enough; a higher resolution mostly costs battery life.

Still torn between 14 and 15 inch?

The difference is roughly a quarter more screen area against some 300 grams extra. Whoever carries the laptop daily picks 14; whoever mostly uses it at a desk picks 15.

Why buy a 14-inch laptop refurbished?

Because this is where you take the biggest price difference against new. A ThinkPad X1 Carbon costs several times new what you pay here, while the carbon fibre chassis hardly ages.

Every machine goes through more than 30 checkpoints: processor, memory, SSD, screen, keyboard, battery, hinges and all the ports. Whatever does not pass the test, we replace.

After that comes a clean installation of Windows 11 Pro. You get a 2-year warranty and 30 days to change your mind, and on orders placed before 12:00 the laptop leaves the same day.

Frequently asked questions

Which 14-inch laptops do you sell refurbished?

Mainly Lenovo ThinkPads: the X1 Carbon in Gen 10, 11 and 12, the X1 Yoga in Gen 6 and 8, the T14s in Gen 1 and 3, and the T490s. From HP we carry the ZBook Firefly 14. That makes 14 inch by far the size with the widest range in our shop.

What does a 16:10 screen mean and why is it pleasant?

Most of our 14-inch models have a resolution of 1920 by 1200 instead of 1920 by 1080. That is ten percent more height, which comes down to a few extra lines in a document or a code editor. You scroll less as a result.

How much memory is in a 14-inch laptop?

As standard 16 GB on almost every model, which is ample for office work and video calls. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 12 has 32 GB and an Intel Core Ultra 7, which makes it the most powerful 14 inch we carry.

Which 14 inch has a touchscreen?

The ThinkPad X1 Yoga, in Gen 6 and Gen 8. The screen folds right round through 360 degrees so you can use it as a tablet, and it comes with a pen that charges inside the chassis. The T490s is also available in a version with a touchscreen.

What does a 14-inch laptop weigh?

Between 1.1 and 1.5 kilos. At around a kilo the X1 Carbon is the lightest we carry, lighter even than some 13-inch models, because its chassis is carbon fibre. The ZBook Firefly weighs the most, because of the dedicated graphics card.

Is 14 inch large enough for two windows side by side?

Tight but workable, certainly on a 16:10 screen. For a document next to a browser it is fine. If you work with wide spreadsheets all day, 15.6 inch is more comfortable, or you connect a second screen at the office.
