In practice a 15-inch laptop has a 15.6-inch screen: roughly 34.5 by 19.4 centimetres of screen, at a weight of 1.7 to 2.2 kilos. Refurbished you buy it at DSL-TECH as a business model from Dell, HP or Lenovo, tested on more than 30 points and with a 2-year warranty.
For whoever mostly uses the laptop at a desk and carries it now and then. That is the majority, and it is why 15.6 inch has been the best-selling screen size for years.
At this size you put a document and a browser side by side without the text becoming unreadable. At 13 and 14 inch you end up panning or zooming for that.
It also has room for a full keyboard with a numeric keypad, which helps if you work with figures a lot. Bookkeepers and planners often name that as decisive.
If you are on the train every day, a 14-inch model is probably more comfortable. If what you want is as much screen as possible, have a look at 17 inch.
Less than the numbers suggest. The jump from 14 to 15.6 inch gives you roughly a quarter more screen area, against some 300 grams of extra weight.
| Size | Screen (16:9) | Weight | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14 inch | 31.0 x 17.4 cm | 1.1 to 1.5 kg | On the move every day |
| 15.6 inch | 34.5 x 19.4 cm | 1.7 to 2.2 kg | A fixed desk, sometimes carried |
| 17.3 inch | 38.3 x 21.5 cm | 2.5 to 3.0 kg | A desktop replacement |
The measurements are of the screen, not of the chassis. Modern laptops have narrow bezels, so a 15.6 inch now often fits in a case that was meant for 14 inch a few years ago.
Mainly business models from Dell, HP and Lenovo. Those are built for years of daily use and therefore take another round as a refurbished laptop without trouble.
Looking for a 15-inch Dell in particular? The Precision series is the business line with the most computing power; there is more about it on our page about refurbished Dell laptops.
At the resolution of the screen, and above all whether it suits your work. Full HD is sharp at 15.6 inch, but anyone working with timelines or large spreadsheets gets more out of a higher resolution.
Then look at the memory. For office work 16 GB is ample; if you run virtual machines or heavy software, 32 GB is the safer choice.
You only need a dedicated graphics card for 3D work, editing or CAD. Models with their own GPU weigh more and last less long on a battery charge.
Finally, look at the condition. We state per machine how the chassis and the battery are doing, from as good as new to visibly used, and that condition sets the price.
Not sure yet which size or which specifications you need? The laptop finder walks you through the questions.
Because at this size you get the most back for your money. Business 15-inch laptops are leased in large numbers and let go after three years, while technically there are years left in them.
Every machine goes through more than 30 checkpoints here: processor, memory, SSD, screen, keyboard, battery and all the ports. Whatever does not pass the test, we replace.
After that comes a clean installation of Windows 11 Pro. You get a 2-year warranty and 30 days to change your mind, and on orders placed before 12:00 the laptop leaves the same day.

The 15 inch refers to the diagonal of the screen, not to the laptop itself. On the common 15.6 inch with a 16:9 ratio that is roughly 34.5 by 19.4 centimetres of screen. The laptop around it usually measures about 36 by 24 centimetres and therefore fits in almost any laptop bag.
Almost every laptop sold as 15 inch in fact has a 15.6-inch screen. That size became the standard when manufacturers switched to widescreen. So if you search for 15 inch you get 15.6-inch models, and that is correct.
Count on 1.7 to 2.2 kilos for the models we carry. The Dell Precision 5570 is one of the lighter ones; a mobile workstation like the HP ZBook 15 G6 sits at the top end because it has heavier cooling and a dedicated graphics card.
For almost all office work, yes. You put two windows side by side without having to scroll, and there is room for a full keyboard with a numeric keypad. If you work a lot with timelines, spreadsheets or CAD, an external monitor is still pleasant.
A 14-inch laptop is roughly 300 grams lighter and a few centimetres narrower, which matters if you carry it daily. A 15 inch gives you more working room and more often a numeric keypad. Which one fits better depends on how often you are on the move.
Two: the HP ZBook 15 G6 and the ZBook Power G7, both 15.6-inch mobile workstations with an Intel Core i7 or i9 and a dedicated NVIDIA graphics card. We have no cheaper HP in this size; if you are looking for a simpler 15-inch computer, the Dell Precision 3560 is the sharpest priced.
Yes. Notebook and laptop are two words for the same machine, and manufacturers use them interchangeably. HP sells models literally called HP Notebook; what is inside does not differ from a model called a laptop.
Full HD, so 1920 by 1080, is sharp enough at 15.6 inch for everyday use. If you do photo editing or video editing, a higher resolution is pleasant because you can fit more tools next to your work. At this screen size the difference is clearly visible.
