A 16-inch laptop almost always has a 16:10 screen of roughly 34.5 by 21.5 centimetres, so you see more lines at once than on a 15.6 inch. Refurbished, this size at DSL-TECH is workstation class: Dell Precision and HP ZBook Fury, with a 2-year warranty.

  • Dell Precision 7670 and 5680, HP ZBook Fury 16 G9 and G11
  • 16:10 ratio: as wide as a 15.6 inch, but taller
  • 16 to 64 GB of memory and up to a 2 TB SSD
  • No Lenovo in this size; the ThinkPad P15v is 15.6 inch

Why does 16 inch exist at all?

Because 15.6 inch gave too little height. Around 2021 manufacturers switched to a 16:10 ratio, and at that shape the diagonal comes out at exactly 16 inch.

The result is that a 16 inch is hardly wider than a 15.6 inch, but about ten percent taller. In a document, a spreadsheet or a code editor you therefore see a few more lines.

That sounds small and in practice makes a surprising difference, because you scroll less often. Anyone working in text or tables all day notices it within a week.

How does 16 inch compare with 15 and 17 inch?

SizeRatioScreenWeight
15.6 inch16:934.5 x 19.4 cm1.7 to 2.2 kg
16 inch16:1034.5 x 21.5 cm1.9 to 2.5 kg
17.3 inch16:938.3 x 21.5 cm2.5 to 3.0 kg

The 16 inch and the 17.3 inch are the same height. The difference is in the width, and with it in whether the laptop still fits in your bag.

If what you want is as compact as possible, the 15 inch is the better choice. If you are after the largest screen, read about 17-inch laptops.

Which 16-inch laptops do we sell refurbished?

Four models, and all of them are mobile workstations. That is no coincidence: 16 inch was introduced for professionals, and the business fleets we buy consist of Precision and ZBook in this size.

Who is a 16-inch laptop meant for?

For whoever does heavy work in a fixed place and carries the laptop a few times a week. Think of CAD draughtsmen, video editors, 3D designers and developers working in several environments at once.

All four of our models have a dedicated NVIDIA graphics card and room for 64 GB of memory. That is considerably more than an ordinary business laptop can take.

If you mainly do office work, you are paying for computing power you will never call on. In that case a 14 or 15-inch business model is the wiser buy.

Unsure about the memory? For CAD and editing 32 GB is the practical minimum, and the laptop finder walks you through the rest.

Why buy a 16-inch laptop refurbished?

Because this is the size where new hits hardest. A 16-inch workstation with 32 GB and a dedicated graphics card costs several times new what you pay here.

These machines come out of business fleets and are built for years of heavy use. Every one goes through more than 30 checkpoints: processor, memory, SSD, screen, keyboard, battery and all the ports.

After that comes a clean installation of Windows 11 Pro. You get a 2-year warranty and 30 days to change your mind, and on orders placed before 12:00 the laptop leaves the same day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a 15 and a 16-inch laptop?

More than that one inch suggests. Almost every 16 inch has a 16:10 ratio instead of 16:9, which makes the screen taller as well. You therefore see some ten percent more lines in a document or code editor, while the laptop is hardly wider.

How large is a 16-inch laptop in centimetres?

At the common 16:10 ratio the screen measures roughly 34.5 by 21.5 centimetres. The laptop around it is about 36 by 25 centimetres. In width that is little different from a 15.6 inch; the difference is mostly in the height.

Which 16-inch laptops do you have refurbished?

The Dell Precision 7670 and 5680, and the HP ZBook Fury 16 in G9 and G11. Those are all mobile workstations with a dedicated NVIDIA graphics card. We do not carry a Lenovo in 16 inch: the ThinkPad P15v is 15.6 inch.

Why are 16-inch laptops so often workstations?

Because manufacturers introduced this size for professionals who need screen space without wanting to lug a 17 inch around. The chassis also has room for heavier cooling, which is needed with a dedicated graphics card and a lot of memory.

What does a 16-inch laptop weigh?

Count on 1.9 to 2.5 kilos for the models we carry. The Precision 5680 is the lightest of the four; the ZBook Fury 16 sits at the top end because of the heavier cooling and the larger battery.

Is 16 inch too big to carry?

For a daily commute it is on the heavy side, but it fits in almost any 16-inch laptop bag. If you take it to the office or a client a few times a week, it is perfectly doable. If you are on the move every day, look at 14 inch.
