Who is a 17-inch laptop meant for?

For whoever wants to replace a desktop without buying a desktop. You get a screen that fits two documents side by side without the text becoming small, plus a full keyboard with a numeric keypad.

In practice those are CAD draughtsmen, video editors and 3D designers. They run software that stays at full load for hours on end, and only a chassis with ample cooling keeps that up.

If you carry the laptop every day, this is the wrong size. Count on a four-kilo bag including the power supply. Rather look at 14 inch or 15 inch in that case.

Does a 17-inch laptop fit in an ordinary bag?

Not in a standard laptop bag. Most bags are made for up to 15.6 inch, and a 17.3-inch machine is some four centimetres wider and three centimetres deeper.

So when buying a bag or backpack, check that it explicitly says 17 inch. The same goes for the compartment in a travel bag and for the tray at airport security.

How long does a 17 inch last on a battery charge?

Shorter than you would expect from the size. A large screen and a dedicated graphics card together draw a fair amount of power, and the larger battery only partly makes up for that.

For light work you usually get half a working day. If you are rendering or editing, a power socket is not a luxury but a condition.

We state the battery condition with every machine, and separate batteries are under parts.

Why buy a 17-inch laptop refurbished?

Because new hits hardest here. A 17-inch workstation with 32 GB and a professional graphics card costs several times new what you pay here.

These machines come out of business fleets and are built for years of heavy use. Every one goes through more than 30 checkpoints, including the cooling and the fans, which work hardest at this size.

After that comes a clean installation of Windows 11 Pro. You get a 2-year warranty and 30 days to change your mind, and on orders placed before 12:00 the laptop leaves the same day.

Frequently asked questions

Which 17-inch laptops do you sell refurbished?

The Dell Precision 5750, 5760, 5770, 7750 and 7770, and the HP ZBook Fury 17 in G7 and G8. All of them mobile workstations with a dedicated NVIDIA graphics card. We do not carry a cheaper 17 inch for home use.

How large is a 17-inch laptop in centimetres?

The screen measures roughly 38.3 by 21.5 centimetres at a 16:9 ratio. The laptop around it is about 40 by 27 centimetres, and that does not fit in every laptop bag: when buying a bag or backpack, check that it explicitly says 17 inch.

What does a 17-inch laptop weigh?

Between 2.5 and 3 kilos, plus a power supply that weighs almost a kilo by itself. At around 2.5 kilos the Precision 5770 is the lightest we carry; the ZBook Fury 17 and the Precision 7770 sit at the top end because of the heavier cooling.

Is a 17-inch laptop still portable?

Now and then, yes; for a daily commute, not really. Count on a four-kilo bag including the power supply. Most people buy this size as a desktop replacement: it sits in one place and goes along to a client now and then.

Why are 17-inch laptops so often workstations?

Because the chassis has room for heavier cooling, and you need that with a dedicated graphics card and a processor running at full load for hours. Manufacturers therefore build this size mainly for CAD, 3D rendering and video editing.

How much memory can go in?

The models we carry come with 16 or 32 GB, and the Precision 7750 and 7770 are also available with 64 GB. For CAD and editing 32 GB is the practical minimum; for office work this size is over-dimensioned anyway.
